Woo, now I can finally say I have a favorite DJ.
I found Asle Bjørn, a Denmarkian, or Dane, or person-from-Denmark, in one of my late-night searchings of the net. “Minimal tech house” is one of the descriptions, and I don’t know enough to agree or disagree.
He has a musical background, which is nice. Here’s the translated bio: “Asle has been a DJ since the age of fourteen – but spinning records was not really his first musical experience. Being from a musical family he started playing instruments at an early age, mastering the flute at nine. The flute was later exchanged to the guitar and drums and eventually the instrument of choice, the piano. Asle has since developed his own style of ‘tight, dirty, and pumping house’, and most recently a more soulful funky electro flavor.”
Here is a photo of him on a Russian cruise ship, with an escort by his side (probably). (No unpaid human could have abs like that.)
He has one new album of original work, “My Places” which is outstanding, some EPs of original work which I haven’t heard, and for free there’s a few months of hour-long DJ sets (of other people’s music, blended into a set). You may as well grab these free sets, even if you’re not sure about his album of original material. But his original album is what impressed me first.
Warning: Don’t buy it from Amazon. They have a defective track one which cuts off about a minute early. (I’ve sent them a note.) Better source is here: http://www.junodownload.com/ppps/products/1364042-02.htm. Don’t bother looking for a pressed CD, there isn’t one. But it is available in lossless if you pay more.
There’s also a great single of remixes of the song “My War” from that album that I’d really like to buy if it weren’t so costly. The exchange rate is killing the ability to buy music from Europe.
As far as unauthorized distribution goes, there’s nothing of his floating around.
