Video Ops: The New World

Making room in my top 20 (or 30) films: The New World, a retelling of the Pocahontas story, or perhaps just a story “inspired” by what might have been. Regardless of accuracy it tells its deeper story almost without words, and those words that are used sparingly – including bits of narration from each of the main characters that are presented as if from letters or journals (though likely not in fact) – are powerful.

Also, Pocahontas (played by Q’Orianka Kilcher) is as beautiful in the lens of the camera as she is in John Smith’s eyes. She is idealised, but the story depicts her at first as she was seen by those around her who had romantic sensibilities, so it is true enough.
