I am surprised by how bad some of the second season episodes of Battlestar Galactica are (the second half of season two, out on DVD now). In the span of three episodes they’ve done two cliched stories. One was a “mafia” story that wouldn’t pass muster even on a network tv show, and one was the standard second season exercise of “hostage standoff”. Dead Zone season 2 used that one too — many shows do. Many Earthbound shows do…but I didn’t expect an “Earth-bound” show like Galactica to resort to that kind of tripe.
So far there hasn’t been an outstanding episode in this second half of season two (not after the resolution of the Pegasus standoff, that is), but I’ve got 3 more episodes to view. I’ll forgive the writers’ directionless lull if they can refocus in time for a nice finale. Update: And boom! The next episode knocked it out of the ballpark. Yay for the team.
Update update: I’ve finished the second season. And while this second-half of the second season was erratic, unfocused, and finally far too rushed when it finally acheived a focus, it was still good.
