Re the Ph.D. student who crossed a barrier at an airport to kiss his girlfriend goodbye:

If the area he entered was meant to be secure, why was it protected by a nylon rope and not, say, a wall? You cannot expect people to take the “orders” seriously when the design and architecture express a completely different message. A nylon rope conveys “please don’t cross”, not “don’t cross or we’ll shoot!”
