This is not a depressed blog entry, but it may sound like one. I am not sure what people are supposed to do post-college. Here in Boulder, people often go for advanced degrees, which they then get, and then …what? We are taught when we are children that children are supposed to go to school, go to college, and then it is not clear if there is anything else after that. Some people get jobs they like, but much of the work – probably nearly all of it, unless you are blue collar – is simply work for the sake of keeping people occupied.
I myself have settled into simply being entertained. At first by books, then by music, now by movies. It seems nice enough but I am not sure what the point is. To saturate ourselves with culture so we can tell whoever is in heaven that humanity has some good ideas and some creative folks? Perhaps.
The creation of entertainment seems to be the pinnacle of what humans can achieve, and yet there is no reason for everyone to do it, since one Joss Whedon can entertain a few hundred thousand people.
I’ve heard that in the past there used to be leaders and followers. Now there’s entertainers and the entertained.
