AIM sounds

Posted in Personal by Will on Wednesday, June 11th, 2008 ~ 6pm

I hate the default AIM sounds, so finally, after long suffering, I’ve made three of my own. One of which is ready to share. Update: Three of which are ready to share:

  • RadioSwirl – for receiving IMs, this recreates the experience of tuning knobs on some kind of AM radio receiver/transmitter.
  • RadioSwirl_Short – for sending IMs. The same experience of tuning knobs on some kind of AM radio receiver/transmitter, but even more brief.
  • Go – a soft brief sound for when people come or go, this recreates the experience of not noticing. Yet it is there if you listen for it. Subtle.

I always set up my first incoming as the cow moo. Besides that, I try to turn off all sounds. Why do I need to be notified that I just sent an IM? Why, if I heard it the first time, should I need a ding every time someone IMs me? And why do I care if people come or go? If I’m waiting for someone specific, AIM has an excellent alarm notification system.

I like a bit of sound because if I am on another screen (not the IM screen) or away from my computer (walking around, perhaps) I won’t know if someone has sent a reply yet. That said I usually have my speakers off anyhow. I prefer my computer silent for the most part — but a whisper of a sound now and then can be helpful.
